Boil Water Order issued for Stirling after breaks shut down system

STIRLING – Residents of Stirling began the week without running water, and as it comes back on, they now face boiling it.

Alberta Health Services issued a boil water order for the village southeast of Lethbridge Monday, April 24. It followed water main breaks that forced the entire shutdown of the water system a day earlier.

According to the village website, residents were notified of the shutdown around 1 p.m. Sunday.  As of 5:30 p.m. crews were working on a pair of line breaks, one a broken valve on a service main line on 7 Street, the other on 7 Avenue, on the village main line.

At 11 p.m. repairs were complete, and workers began pressurizing the system. But one valve burst and another developed problems, leaving the village without water Monday morning and prompting the school to close. Parts had to be brought in from Calgary.

A truck was brought in to supply potable water, and the Town of Raymond opened up its pool showers to Stirling residents. The village also received a donation of 80 cases of bottled water.

By Monday afternoon repairs were complete crews had once again begun pressurizing the system. People were advised that a boil water order had been issued due to the system being interrupted. The water will have to pass tests before the order can be lifted.

Any water to be consumed directly or used in cooking must be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute.

According to the 2016 Census, Stirling had a population of 978.
