Two Hurricanes win Eastern Conference awards

LETHBRIDGE – Two members of the Lethbridge Hurricanes are finalists for WHL awards, the league announced Wednesday, March 21.

Logan Flodell was named top goaltender in the Eastern Conference, and a finalist for the Del Wilson Memorial Trophy. In 61 games this season, Flodell had a 3.13 goals-against average, and a 0.909 save percentage. Flodell was acquired from Swift Current as part of a multi-player trade Jan. 9.

Dylan Cozens is the Eastern Conference finalist for the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year. Cozens has 22 goals and 31 assists in 57 games played. Cozens was drafted by the Hurricanes 19th overall in the 2016 Bantam Draft.

Other Eastern Conference award winners are Jayden Halbgewachs (Moose Jaw Warriors) for player of the year, Kale Clague (Moose Jaw Warriors) for top defenceman, Aleksi Heponiemi (Swift Current Broncos) for most sportsmanlike player, Alan Millar (Moose Jaw Warriors) for executive of the year, and Manny Viveiros (Swift Current Broncos) for coach of the year.

Western Conference finalists are Carter Hart (Everett Silvertips) in two categories, Cal Foote (Kelowna Rockets), Bowen Byram (Vancouver Giants), and Cody Glass (Portland Winterhawks), along with executive Garry Davidson and coach Dennis Williams, both of the Everett Silvertips.

The Warriors are winners of the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy, awarded to the team with the best regular season record. The Warriors were 52-15-2-3. Halbgewachs was the league’s top scorer, with 70 goals and 59 assists in 72 games played, and a plus/minus rating of +43. Glenn Gawdin of the Broncos had the top plus/minus rating, +61 in 67 games played.

Flodell, meanwhile, was named a first-team Eastern Conference All-Star, while Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive was named to the second team.

The WHL playoffs get underway Thursday, March 22 with game one between the Tri-City Americans and the Kelowna Rockets. The Hurricanes begin their first-round playoff series against Red Deer Friday, March 23 at the ENMAX Centre.
