Nearly $150-million in funding announced by the federal and provincial governments for climate action in Alberta

ALBERTA – The province will be receiving nearly $150 million through the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund for programs the federal government believes will save money and energy, while supporting the province’s climate objectives.

The announcement was made earlier this week by Calgary MP Kent Hehr on behalf of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna, and Lethbridge West MLA, and Provincial Minister of Environment and Parks, Shannon Phillips.

The funding is a component of the Low Carbon Economy Fund, which is designed to spur clean growth, and cut carbon pollution while promoting innovative climate solutions.

By building on provincial and territorial leadership, the federal government is banking on the Low Carbon Economy Fund helping Canada meet the commitment under the Paris Agreement, and their own 2030 national climate target.

Alberta is eligible for the funding as a signatory to the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.

Specifically, the federal government will work with the province to focus on helping Albertans use less energy and save money through energy efficiency retrofits.

The Leadership Fund will also support the province’s work with Indigenous communities to install renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions, as well as investing in restoring forests affected by wildfire.

Phillips says investing in a diversified, low carbon economy creates jobs, economic growth, and helps Canadians from coast to coast explore ways to reduce emissions and cut costs.

“From supporting renewables in Indigenous communities to improving energy efficiency, Low Carbon Economy Leadership funding is just one more tool in working to make life better for Albertans and delivering on the priorities set out in our made-in-Alberta Climate Leadership Plan,” Phillips added.

In addition to Alberta, similar funding announcements regarding the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund were made in British Columbia, Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
