Murder charge pending following downtown assault

LETHBRIDGE – A 52-year-old man is in custody and homicide charges are pending, following a violent assault Saturday afternoon (Sept. 16).

A Lethbridge Police officer on patrol in the 400 block of 6 Avenue South observed the assault and intervened at approximately 3:30 p.m. EMS were called and the suspect was arrested at the scene.

A 48-year-old woman was found to be suffering from life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital, where she died a short time later.

An investigation determined that the victim and accused were known to each other, and it was not a random incident.

The victim’s name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of her next of kin, along with other investigative considerations, including the completion of an autopsy.

The name of the accused is also being held for the time being, as charges have yet to be sworn.
