WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK – A clearer picture is emerging of the damage caused by the Kenow fire, within the boundaries of Waterton Lakes National Park.

In an update released Friday, Sept. 15 Parks Canada confirms none of the homes or businesses within the Waterton townsite were lost or damaged, thanks to the efforts of firefighters. The Prince of Wales Hotel also survived undamaged, but there is damage to some surrounding facilities.

Other parts of the park could not be saved. Alpine Stables was destroyed, as was the visitor centre and the East Gate Warden Station, which includes a total loss of the equipment and vehicles as well as the building.

There is damage to the bison paddock, infrastructure surrounding the operations compound, and a significant impact to Crandell Campground.

The Red Rock and Cameron Lake day-use areas, including the Alpine Club of Canada hut, survived unscathed. The golf course has minor exterior damage to the clubhouse.

Parks Canada is still detailing all the damage, which will include things like guardrails and signage. The fire has also created hazards from trees and rock falls.  Due to these conditions, and with the fire still actively burning within the boundaries, the park remains closed and people are advised not to try to return until given the okay.

Fortis Alberta is working with the park to repair damaged transmission lines. Parks Canada said one of its priorities will be to restore important infrastucture to make the park safe for re-entry.

The fire itself has not grown, thanks in part to the cooler, damp conditions. It remains at 36,000 ha (360 sq. km) while the Castle Branch fire is still 500 ha. There is some concern conditions may allow the fire to intensify again over the weekend.
