LETHBRIDGE – Economic development and tourism are priorities Jeff Carlson identifies as he seeks another four-year term on council.

“I think I’m really in touch with a lot of the issues, concerns, hopes and desires of Lethbridgians and I want to make sure they’re represented on council,” Carlson said in an interview with Lethbridge News Now, explaining he wants to continue the work council has done, including working with the other levels of government to obtain funding for local community groups.

Among the accomplishments he cites are projects that he feels some people may think are “mundane,” but important, such as road infrastructure on the west side and Legacy Park in the north end.

Carlson is also proud of the recreational projects.

“The leisure centre, the ATB Centre, I think is huge for our community,” he said. “It’s something that I think we’ve been wanting as a community for some time, and to see that fully funded this time is excellent. The renovations to Henderson pool, it’s pretty evident how popular that has been.”

Carlson chaired the Open and Effective Government Committee. He explained in addition to engaging the community during the budget process, it overhauled council’s policies, and it was work he enjoyed. He’s also proud of the work done by the poverty reduction and truth and reconciliation committees.

He feels the community came through the economic downturn very well, and hopes to continue a path to keep Lethbridge growing through business and employment opportunities.

“I think tourism is going to be a major focus over the next couple of years. We just developed our Destination Management plan, and we’re working through a committee right now to set that up, that’s going to deal with all the tourism opportunities,” he said. Carlson also hopes to continue working with Lethbridge County to attract more air service.

Carlson has served on council since 2007. Born and raised in Lethbridge, he previously headed New West Theatre.
