12th annual downtown Lethbridge Farmers’ Market returns July 5th

Jun 27, 2017 | 1:32 PM

LETHBRIDGE – Thirty vendors are expected at this year’s downtown Lethbridge Farmers’ Market, with five new ones added to the list from last year.

The market will offer everything from fruits and vegetables, honey, candy, baked goods, and meat products, to soaps and lotions, jewelry, clothing, and even hair extensions.

Doug Kyrzanowski, Exhibition Park Marketing Manager, says over the last dozen years, the market has become a part of downtown culture.

“It has become a social event over the 12 years. And secondly, there really isn’t a distribution point for groceries, except for London Market on 13th, and then Save-On, on the north side.”

The market started with just six vendors, and has now to grown five times that number this year.

“It’s one of the most popular things we do in the downtown area in partnership with Exhibition Park.”

-Ted Stilson, Downtown Business Revitilization Executive Director

Kryzanowski says between 700 and 750 people visit the market each week, and that also translates to more interest in other downtown businesses.

“They’re not all downtown core people that shop here. Anytime you put 700 people into an area, it’s fantastic, and I’m sure they spill over into other businesses, too.”

Ted Stilson, Downtown Business Revitilization Executive Director, says with more than 4000 people working and living in the downtown core, the market gives everyone an opportunity to visit, buy goods, and to breathe more life into the area.

“We’re hoping (the market) will spread out of this smaller area and move down the block at some point, or we might have to move it to Galt Gardens, which could be another good addition for it as well. It’s one of the most popular things we do in the downtown area in partnership with Exhibition Park.”

The downtown Farmers’ Market runs each Wednesday, from July 5-September 6, from 10 am until 3 pm.
