Lethbridge College celebrates Black History Month for the first time

 LETHBRIDGE – For the first time, Lethbridge College is celebrating Black History Month.
 
Justice Studies Instructor Ibrahim Turay, who is originally from Sierra Leone, has taken the lead, and hopes to educate people of all colours and ethnic backgrounds.
 
“Diversity makes us stronger and beautiful as a community. Celebrating this event helps studens from this community feel welcom and is a way to teach everyone about the history of black people.”
 
This year, he says they started out with movie days, a traditional clothing day, and a cultural games day coming up February 28th. Next year he hopes to add more events to the caldendar.
 
“We’re planning to have something even more bigger and well organized. We’ll be having some traditional foods and other things like that.”
 
He says there are a number of volunteers who having been helping out this year to help make all of the events a success.
 
Alberta has the third highest population of black people behind Ontario and Quebec, and this is also the first year the provincial government has recognized black history month.
