LETHBRIDGE – Lethbridge College’s student-athletes are assisting those in need battle the winter weather.

The fourth annual Kodiaks Warm Paws campaign is underway at Lethbridge College, with the Athletics department calling on the public for donations of new mittens, gloves, scarves, toques, socks and other outerwear.

“Winter and Christmas can be a tough time for those in need, so for our student athletes to take it upon themselves to help the Warm Paws initiative be successful year in and year out makes me proud,” says Todd Caughlin, manager of Athletics, Residence and Rec Services. “Kodiaks Athletics starts the ball rolling, but it’s truly a college-wide effort to collect the winter items that will help those-in-need to stay warmer.”

Kodiaks athletes kicked off the campaign by spreading cheer through Christmas Carol Karaoke earlier this in November, and ramped up towards the main donation drive at the Kodiaks home basketball games on Nov. 26.

Logan Moncks, Kodiaks basketball player, says that the team is hoping to up their donations and get the entire college student body involved.

“I think that it is awesome that we do something to give back to our community. I think with us being athletes people look up to us and it brings people out to our games so some of these events [clothing drives] can receive more notice.”

Over the past three years the Warm Paws campaign, collected 1,500 items and more than $2,000 in cash donations for the 2015 year.

All of the donated items will be given to people in need through Wood s Homes, the Lethbridge Emergency Shelter, Streets Alive Mission, the YWCA, the Boys and Girls Club of Lethbridge and the Hands on Early Learning Centre (Lethbridge College s on-campus daycare provider).

There are drop-off sites on campus in the following locations:
-Bookstore
-Student Services
-Buchanan Library
-Equipment room in the PE building
-Athletics office
-Lethbridge College Students Association office

All items will be distributed to local charities at 11 a.m. on Dec. 1 in Lethbridge College s Centre Core.
