City Celebrates Organic Waste Diversion As Season Ends

LETHBRIDGE – The season is about to end for Lethbridge’s three yard waste collection sites.

This past year saw a third collection site open, next to the soccer centre in south Lethbridge.

With an additional site, the number of visits increased by 5,000 to more than 35,000. Those visits kept more than one million kilograms of organic material from being wasted in the landfill.

The city turns garden waste, grass clippings, and leaves into compost which it then uses in flower beds and parks. Branches are turned into mulch, which is then given away at Peenaquim Park.

Reusing the material also helps extend the life of the landfill.

The collection sites close Nov. 30. However, the city says residents can still bring yard waste to the Waste and Recycling Centre, with no disposal fee charged on Saturdays between Dec. 1 and Mar. 31.
