Second crane on site at Destination Project

LETHBRIDGE –– Big Yeller has company.

A second crane is being installed at the site of the Destination Project at the University of Lethbridge, joining the massive crane already there. Together they will allow work on the entire site.

The school says work is now 10 per cent complete, with all of the work so far on site preparation, and the foundation and other work below ground level.

“It’s very exciting to see our project emerging from below grade,” project manager Gene Lublinkhof said, explaining the second crane will speed up progress. He added more people will now be working on site, eventually reaching 250 by next summer.

Lublinkhof said work is on schedule and on budget so far.

Daryl Campbell, senior superintendent with construction firm PCL, said crews will begin pouring slabs in September.

“We should be able to see some vertical work coming out of the ground here,” he said. “We’ll be out of the ground here by January, and you should be able to see the start of the actual building kind of come into shape.”

Campbell said except for more rain than expected over the summer, weather conditions have been ideal for construction so far. He said it’s currently the largest project PCL is working on in the southern Alberta region.
