ALBERTA – A task force appointed to advise the provincial government on where to spend Alberta’s new carbon levy will be in Lethbridge next month.

Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Deron Bilous, announced the creation of the five-member panel on Monday.

Bilous, said the task force will help inform the Alberta government on climate technology investments and has no limits on size or type of proposals to be considered.

“Alberta, along with every jurisdiction in the world, is in a race for technology and innovation. Our advantage as an energy leader, and the government’s action on the Climate Leadership Plan, means that we are uniquely positions to lead on clean energy and technology.”

The five-member panel will hold public sessions in Lethbridge, Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie in October and present a report to Bilous in November with their thoughts on where to spend the province’s new carbon levy.

The task force consists of a chair and four members with experience and knowledge in research, development and deployment of climate change-related technology.

The panel includes:

– Guy Lambert – Former Executive at Suncor Energy
– Vic Adamowicz – Vice-Dean, Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta
– Suzanne West – Current President and CEO of Imaginea Energy
– Sara Hastings-Simon Director of the Pembina Institute’s clean energy program
– Shelly Vermillion Business Consultant in Indigenous Communities

The provincial carbon levy scheduled to be imposed Jan. 1, 2017.

The carbon levy, approved in the legislature in June, is expected to bring in $3 billion in fiscal 2017-18.
