LETHBRIDGE – Horse racing returns to the Rocky Mountain Turf Club this weekend, resulting in a significant economic benefit for Lethbridge.

“When you’re looking at times as we’re having now, people need to understand our sport of horse racing,” stated Turf Club General Manager, Rose Rossi. “We are a $45-million economic impact to Lethbridge and area, there’s over a thousand licensed horsemen and a whole lot of jobs.”

Rossi explained that the races attract people from surrounding provinces and the U.S., with jockeys coming from as far away as Jamaica.

She also noted that they make a point of having something for the entire family on race days.

“It’s fun for people of all ages, there’s a petting zoo, kids’ activities, mini-market. Rain or shine, wind or snow, there’s rooms with a view on every floor to bring the gang in and just have some fun.”

The races – which are free to attend – get underway Saturday at 1:15 p.m., with major events like the B Cup Thoroughbred Racing and Canada Cup coming up later in September.
