Alberta Social Housing Receives Big Boost

ALBERTA – The province of Alberta will soon recieve a considerable chunk of change for social housing. 

Veterans Affairs Minister Kent Hehr announced on Friday, September 2, that the Government of Canada is offering up $90 million for social housing from Ottawa in the first year of a brand new 18-year deal. 

“We want to maximize outcomes for individuals and families who need help with their housing needs. This agreement will ensure that Albertans benefit from federal funding for social housing for generations to come,” Hehr said, on behalf of of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. 

The funds cover an estimated 29,000 units, also including some 26,000 homes administered by the Alberta Social Housing Corporation.

“The new Social Housing Agreement allows us to achieve better outcomes for tenants because it gives greater flexibility to improve housing programs,” said Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing.

The agreement allows the provincial government to re-invest savings.
