Phone Scam Targets City Utility Customers

Jul 22, 2016 | 10:58 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Residents are being warned of a new phone scam happening across the city.

Someone will call claiming to be a utility representative for the City of Lethbridge. They’ll advise the victim that their account is overdue and face being disconnected if they don’t make a payment.

The caller will then explain that the only way to make a payment is to purchase a prepaid debit or credit card at a local retailer.

The City is reminding customers that the utility department will not contact them in this manner, and does not accept payment on prepaid cards.

If an account ever does fall into arrears, a written notice will be issued. After that, they will hand deliver a warning notice before anything is disconnected.

If you’ve received a similar call recently, you’re urge to contact the Lethbridge Police Service, or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
