Kainai Powwow Celebrates Pride, Culture and History

Jul 16, 2016 | 8:16 AM

STAND OFF – The 50th Annual Kainai Powwow and Celebration kicked off Friday. Stand Off plays host to the event at Red Crow Park until the afternoon of Sunday, July 17.

Hundreds of drummers and dancers will be in attendance for the largest competition powwow in western Canada.

Blood Tribe Chief and Council, Government Officials and tribe leaders welcome visitors from across North America to watch, and take part in other activities like the Indian Cowboy Rodeo, carnival, games, a golf and baseball tournament and headdress ceremonies.

On Saturday morning, one of those headdresses will be given to Dr. Shey Eagle Bear.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Alberta in 2014, and will begin a medical practice within the Blood Tribe community later this year.

Eagle Bear, 29, will be bestowed with a headdress during a special ceremony to recognize his accomplishments.
