New South Side Recycling & Yard Waste Facility Opens June 20

LETHBRIDGE – There will be no recycling drop off on the south side on Sunday June 19, 2016.

The Fairway Plaza location will be closed after Saturday (June 18), and replaced by a permanent location on 28th Avenue South, between the Soccer Centre and the Judo Centre.

The new facility will officially open Monday (June 20), and will accept both recyclable materials as well as yard-waste.

“We’re really excited to open the third permanent centralized recycling station,” said Tyler Stewart, Programing Assistant with the City of Lethbridge Waste & Recycling Services.”

Stewart also commented on the greater efficacy for City Parks operators, who have joined forces with a new co-located South Parks Depot on the same land parcel.

“Having the Parks Depot on site allows for the Parks Department to mobilize their equipment from a south side location. They won’t have to drive from the north side to the south side when they are working in the area,” he said.

The location also features several structural improves to provide better service to residents.

“There’s better lighting, wind fencing and everything is level at grade so it is easier for residents to drop off their recyclables and yard-waste.

This relocation is the final step in centralizing all recycling stations, which began in 2012 with City Council approval of the project.

The Fairway Plaza Recycling Drop-Off was originally opened as a temporary solution until a suitable permanent location on City-owned land could be found.

In 2015, Lethbridge residents helped to divert more than 2,825 tonnes of household recyclables from the landfill.

In addition, nearly 1 million kilograms of organic materials were collected at yard waste sites across the city.
