Three Bin Waste Carts Pegged A Success By Taber Public Works

TABER – The Town of Taber’s three bin waste management disposal system has been well received, according to town officials.

Since March 2016, residents have been able to use colour-coded rolling carts to sort their waste, recycling and organics for curbside collection.

Gary Scherer, Director of Engineering & Public Works, said that town council is very pleased with the public’s reception.

“Our existing system consisted of a lot of commercial bins; everyone could throw whatever garbage they wanted to in back allies. Now we’ve found in the first four weeks of the next system, we have found that 71.5 per-cent of residents switched to organics and recycling. Now there is only 28.5 per-cent of garbage being sent to landfills,” Scherer said.

The town is also encouraging more recycling by supplying residents with larger recycling and organics bins and smaller garbage carts.

A recycling cart holds 360 L, an organics cart holds 240 L and a garbage cart holds 120 L.

Greg Birtch, Chief Administrative Officer, said that the town has received an outpour of support in efforts to become environmentally responsible with waste.

“We are finding that more and more restaurants and hotels want to get on board for the organics, so the town is looking into that component for the next step,” he said.
