Dr. Probe Elementary Shows Support With Head Shave

LETHBRIDGE – The grade fours at Dr. Probe Elementary School have been hard at work, raising money to support a fellow student who has been battling leukemia.

This past month, donations quadrupled their original goal of $1,500, raising approximately $6,225.

Yuvraj Minhas has been at the Alberta Children’s Hospital for more than a year. He returned briefly to school before a relapse and has recently undergone a stem cell transplant. The family has been in and out of Ronald McDonald House and has had to take extended time off work.

This morning (June 3), Minhas was face-timed in to an assembly where 25 students, teachers and coaches had their heads shaved to show their support.

Marla Boudoff, Minhas’ teacher, said her students have shown tremendous generosity throughout the fundraising.

“I believe it has taught the children empathy, and how to look out and take care of one another& they were so understanding.

“It makes me super proud of all of them, just the compassion that they are showing to one another, learning that we are a family and that we need to take care of one another.”

Boudoff smiled as she spoke about her students who traveled to each classroom and taught others about Yuvraj’s condition.

Brooklyn Filipenkl and Brooklyn Sondrgaard, two grade four students who emceed the event said the month took a lot of teamwork, but that fundraising for their friend was important.

“It’s a lot of fun because you get to teach people that everyone should treat people the way that they want to be treated,” Sondrgaard said.
