Art for a Cause Coming to Galt Museum

LETHBRIDGE – Students from across three local school districts are bridging art and culture in efforts of creating an inclusive environment for newly landed Canadians.

Over three hundred pieces of art were produced by students in Grades 1-12 which showcase artistic representations of the refugee experience.

Now these pieces will be on display at the Galt Museum on Wednesday, April 27.

Over the past few months Kids’ Art For A Cause and The Alberta Teachers’ Association Local 41 DEHR Committe (Diversity, Equity and Human Rights) localized global issues of immigration and discussed hardships endured by refugees from war-torn countries with classrooms.

Students employed this new-found knowledge brushstroke by brushstroke in various pieces of art.

All proceeds from sales will go to the Lethbridge Family Services Refugee Fund, in support of immigrant youth.

Kurt Zielke, Teacher at Senator Buchanan Elementary School and Co-Chair of DERH Committee, said that the event is not only a good learning experience for the students teaching them how to be welcoming and inclusive, but that it also works in favour of the families who recently immigrated to Lethbridge as a way to see their histories acknowledged and appreciated.

The Gala will run from 6 to 8 p.m on Wednesday.
